WAFC Intermediate League
2009 Summer Tournament

Tournament Rules

Games will be played to 13 or 15 (depending on number of teams in your pool)
Capping & Sudden Death
·       Games are win by two, hard cap at 15 or 17 (depending on number of teams in your pool).
·       At ten (10) minutes before the scheduled start of the next round of games, if it is the middle of a point, finish the point. Add two to the highest score and play to that score, no win by two. There is no horn announcing the cap.
·       If the game is still going when the next round is scheduled to begin, finish the point. The team with more points is the winner; if it’s a tie, play one more point to determine a winner.
·       NO time-outs are permitted after the cap, regardless of how many time-outs each team has used already.
·       Captains should do their best to bring the game to a finish once the cap has been applied.

Assessing Points
At the time a game is scheduled to begin, a team which has at least seven players (with at least two women) should notify the other team (the captain, if s/he is present) that they are ready to begin playing. If the other team is unwilling/unable to field a team, the first team may begin assessing one point per five minutes. The team that has been "challenged" to play may do one of three things: (1) play short-handed, (2) be assessed one point per five minutes, (3) take a time out to avoid being assessed one point. Each time-out “buys” five minutes; up to two time-outs may be used for this purpose.

Gender Balance
The offense (the team receiving the pull) “suggests”  the male: female ratio (either 4:3 or 5:2) for that point. Two is the minimum number of women. If unable to play two women (for health reasons or if a team just doesn’t have two women), they may play with 5 guys and 1 woman). If feasible, the defense is expected to play at least as many women as the offense.  The defense may choose not to match if they do not have enough women, or for health reasons.  Teams with 4 or more women should match the gender ratio, while teams with 3 or less women cannot be forced to play all 3.

Advancing to the Play-Offs
The league has been divided into four (4) pools. The top three teams from each pool will advance to the Play-Offs, which will be held August 9th, 2008 at Lake Fairfax. In the event of any two-way tie, the winner of the head-to-head between those two teams gets the higher ranking. In the event that more than two teams are tied, advancement will be determined based on point-differentials from games that involve only the teams that are tied, so it is important to keep track of scores. Scores need to be reported to Bryan Greenwald following the days games. In the event that a tie cannot be broken based on (a) head-to-head and (b) point differentials, the captains will compete in rock-paper-scissors, or some other mutually agreed-upon game of chance. The schedule and qualifiers will be announced as soon as I get home and can send an email.

Weather
As always, the WAFC hotline will be updated each day (probably by 8AM).  Have your players call (301) LUV-B-MAX to check the field status.

If Saturday is rained out, pool play will move to Sunday and the elimination rounds will be played on Saturday August 15th at Lake Fairfax. If we lose both days due to rain the tourney will be moved to the weekend of the 15th and 16th and played as scheduled.

Park Policies - VERY IMPORTANT!
Lake Fairfax is one of the few places in the DC area with enough fields (and decent fields at that) to hold a tournament. Please do what you can so that your team does not jeopardize our privileges and adhere to these rules (i.e. tell your players about these rules!!):
·       Park in the upper cricket field lot (not by the lower pavilion). Do not pass the set of cones set up to designate the cricket player’s parking.
·       No alcohol. If you want to drink, take your team out after the game.
·       Dogs must be on a secured leash at the perimeter of the grassy area. If you’re in the center fields, the dog should be secured by the outer endzone.
·       PACK OUT ALL TRASH. If you don’t, I have to. You’ll be given a trash bag, so please take the time to clean-up the fields before leaving and take the bag home with you.

Pick-Ups
Pick-ups are not permitted without the expressed consent of the League Commissioner prior to day one. If s/he is not already a WAFC member s/he needs to sign a waiver. Having a pick-up who has not been approved by the League Commissioner is grounds for forfeit. No additional pick-ups are allowed for day two (i.e. if you need pick-ups, ask for approval before day one).

Spirit Discs
Each team will receive a disc designated the “spirit disc.” This disc should go to the member of the team who has exhibited great spirit all season. The disc generally goes to a newer player and may not be given to a tournament-only pick-up. It is up to captains to decide how to pick the winner; they may choose the individual or may have the whole team vote anonymously.

Other
Please bring cones to set up a field and encourage all of your players to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, etc.

All other rules from the regular season continue to apply. Please use the 11th edition for any game rules.
