WAFC Jr. History
WAFC Jr. began with a group of kids and a few dedicated teachers at YHB in Virginia. In 2001 the kids formed more of a official team and they entered into WAFC and won the Clique C division (lowest at the time). In 2002, Dave Soles and Ben Cohen started a B team while the A team started playing juniors ultimate, traveling to Birmingham for Junior Nationals. The following year, Soles worked with Jody Avingon and BVH to set up a youth league for the whole DC area - WAFC Jr. This began as a way to get opponents for YHB within a reasonable driving distance instead of having to go all the way up to Philly or down to Richmond. It started with 4 schools, in 2005 it was 8, in 2006 it grew to about 14. For the past 5 years the league has held steady with about 20 teams participating.
In addition to their league, WAFC Jr. also holds an annual essay contest for youth players to attend NUTC camp in Amhearst MA to learn skills they can bring back to their team in the DC area. They also run a summer camp. 2011 was the 4th summer and had about 100 participants at 4 sessions in MD, Arlington and an overnight camp on the Chesapeake Bay. Many WAFC members also contribute their time as volunteer coaches for teams around the area. See the information above if you're interested in getting involved!
