WAFC Jr and Youth Ultimate Info

Welcome to WAFC Jr’s page!

We organize ultimate Frisbee games for kids in the DC area.

We mainly have high school based teams but we also have had middle school teams and teams based at churches or synagogues.  Most of our teams are mostly guys but there are several all-girls teams and mixed teams in the league.

We have over 20 teams from all over the DC region including teams up beyond Frederick MD and even on the Eastern Shore.  And we are always looking to add new teams to our community.

Our main season is in the spring where we organize and host games from mid-March to early June.  We also organize tournaments in the fall and clinics in the summer depending on interest. We do whatever we can to support and promote youth ultimate and will try our best to connect you with information and resources to help your program grow.

Check out the WAFC Jr. Facebook page for more, up-to-date info.

Choose from the options below depending on your needs:

Are you a group who already practices/plays as a team and you are interested in playing other teams?  Awesome, because we have lots of this going on and are eager to have more teams participate.  Check this out!

Are you a youth team that is looking for a coach or are you an adult volunteer that wants to work with a youth team?
That is also great because lots of our programs need coaches.  We’ll need to run a background check but we’d be happy to help connect teams with volunteers.  Click here.

Are you a high school kid interested in playing and/or joining a team?
We don’t have a lot of great solutions for you but we have some options here.

Are you the parent of a elementary or middle school kid interested in playing?
We have some summer camp info and links to other opportunities for youth (page under construction!).

Are you interested in teaching clinics?
We occasionally run youth oriented clinics. Click here.

WAFC Jr. History

WAFC Jr. began with a group of kids and a few dedicated teachers at YHB in Virginia. In 2001 the kids formed more of a official team and they entered into WAFC and won the Clique C division (lowest at the time). In 2002, Dave Soles and Ben Cohen started a B team while the A team started playing juniors ultimate, traveling to Birmingham for Junior Nationals. The following year, Soles worked with Jody Avingon and BVH to set up a youth league for the whole DC area - WAFC Jr.  This began as a way to get opponents for YHB within a reasonable driving distance instead of having to go all the way up to Philly or down to Richmond.  It started with 4 schools, in 2005 it was 8, in 2006 it grew to about 14.  For the past 5 years the league has held steady with about 20 teams participating.

In addition to their league, WAFC Jr. also holds an annual essay contest for youth players to attend NUTC camp in Amhearst MA to learn skills they can bring back to their team in the DC area.  They also run a summer camp.  2011 was the 4th summer and had about 100 participants at 4 sessions in MD, Arlington and an overnight camp on the Chesapeake Bay. Many WAFC members also contribute their time as volunteer coaches for teams around the area.  See the information above if you're interested in getting involved!
