    Leagues
There will be FIVE leagues from which to choose this year.

Advanced League – A highly competitive coed league consisting of 10-12 teams of club-caliber players. Regular season games will alternate between Monday and Tuesday nights, with a few weekend games, and begin the week of June 16th. Rather than playing a full weekend tournament at the end of the season, the Advanced League champion will be decided using a single elimination playoff system on weeknights starting in early August.

Intermediate League – A competitive coed league consisting of players with an intermediate to high level of Ultimate skills and experience. Regular season games will be played mostly on weeknights, (mostly Monday and Tuesday evenings) with a few weekend games, and begin the week of June 16th. The season will culminate with a full weekend tournament on August 9th and 10th.

Rec League – A recreational coed league consisting of players looking to learn or teach the game of Ultimate and/or play in a more laid back environment. Regular season games will be played on mostly weeknights (mostly Wendesday and Friday evenings) with 1 or 2 weekend games. The season will begin the week of June 9th and culminate with a full weekend tournament on August 2nd & 3rd.

Weekend League – A recreational coed league consisting of players looking to learn or teach the game of Ultimate and/or play in a more laid back environment. Regular season games will be played entirely on the weekend with games on both Saturdays and Sundays. First games will be the weekend of June 14th and the season will culminate with a full weekend tournament in early August.

Corporate League – The Summer Corporate League is a coed league open to Ultimate teams in the D.C. metro area affiliated by a common employer or alumni of a school. Please note: Corporate League is NOT summer Clique League. Corporate League games will be played on mostly Monday and Thursday evenings, with a playoffs beginning in early August.

Note about game nights: field permits dictate the scheduling of games.  Please keep in mind that with close to 100 teams across five leagues, there are not always enough fields each night to allow each team to play in its preferred location.   Nearly every field can be accessed by Metro so options do exist.  Summer League games are scheduled to start at 6:30pm.

    Registration and Formation of Leagues
Each Summer League applicant will select the league in which they want to participate, however, spots in the Advanced League are not guaranteed. The number of Advanced League spots will be limited and granted to those with the highest ratings while keeping the proper gender ratio intact.  This means you may opt for Advanced League, but you may get assigned to the Intermediate League because too many people with a higher rating signed up for Advanced League.   If you choose the Intermediate league you are guaranteed a spot in that league. Advanced league teams will then be formed by volunteer captains at a live draft.   The size of Rec League will depend entirely on the number of people who select this option by the registration cutoff date.  Intermediate and Rec teams will be formed by league commissioners using player ratings to generate equally skilled teams.  If you volunteer to be a Rec League captain, you may also play in either Advanced or Intermediate League. No one may play in both Advanced and Intermediate Leagues.

    Baggage
Baggaging with a significant other or a housemate for commuting purposes will be allowed.  A maximum of TWO people may baggage together, no more.  PLEASE NOTE – All members of a baggage will be placed in lowest skill-level league selected.  For example, if John and Jane baggage, and John selects Advanced League, while Jane selects Intermediate League, they will be placed on an Intermediate League team together.  Two club level players may only baggage together if they are playing in Advanced League.  Additionally, Advanced League captains can opt to either baggage with someone OR have a co-captain, but not both.   This ensures no Advanced League team will have more than two players on its roster before the draft.

    Sandbaggers
This new format discourages traditional “sandbaggers” (those who rate themselves lower than their actual skill level) since doing so may cause you to drop out of the Advanced League and into the Intermediate League.   Please do not reverse sandbag (rating yourself higher than your actual skill level) in order to ensure yourself a spot in a league.  The registration list will be carefully examined by knowledgeable sources and ratings can be altered.  Ultimately, YOU will be held accountable for your rating by your own team and others within the Leagues, so please be honest.

    Captains
As always, the success of Summer League will depend heavily upon players volunteering to captain teams.  Captaining consists of minimal administrative work such as ensuring attendance at games and coordinating with other captains, as well as some sideline and on-field leadership.  In Advanced League, captaining duties also consist of drafting your team.   Experienced players signing up for Rec League are highly encouraged to captain, as they will likely be looked to for leadership.  So PLEASE consider captaining to help ensure a successful Summer League.

    Volunteers
As you all know, WAFC has recently been more actively seeking volunteers to help out with various club activities.   Opportunities to help the club range from one-time activities (planning or helping to run a tournament), season-long duties (captaining a team), and longer-term positions (securing fields or acting as a deputy commissioner/commissioner of a league).  If you or someone you know are interested in helping with any WAFC activities or want more information about what is entailed, please contact Bryan via email, Bryan AT wafc DOT org, or speak to any WAFC board member!  WAFC will provide training and support for all roles, so you will not be alone.
