Past Leagues:
League Description: For players of all abilities, from experienced players to people who have never picked up a disc before, the goal of rec league is to provide a casual, but structured game, where newer players learn from the more experienced players. Individuals sign up and are randomly placed on teams with an effort to make teams as even as possible. There are some rec league specific rules here: Rec Rules
Duration: June 14th-the week before August 28/29
Days of the Week: Monday/Wednesday/Friday
Tournament: August 28-29th
Gender Ratio: 5 men/2 women or 4 men/3 women, offense dictates
Cost: $45/players, which includes a jersey.
Location: Throughout the metropolitan area, including downtown D.C.; Arlington/Fairfax, VA; and Montgomery County, MD. Many locations are Metro accessible, but not all.
Since WAFC has no control over the weather, WAFC cannot guarantee all scheduled games will be played. We operate a hotline to alert players of cancellations.

Interested in captaining a Rec team?
A good captain should be able to handle disputes calmly, motivate and teach players, help your team pick a good team name, and forward information from the league to players. It helps to have a basic understanding of the fundamentals of Ultimate (including Spirit of the Game), but you don't have to be the best person on the team to be effective.
If you're interested, please select "Yes", in the captain field and tell us a little about your experience in the "notes" field. We will make sure you have a co-captain (if you don't have one already that you're baggaging with).

Baggage Notes
UPDATED: What is Baggage? On the registration page you'll see some boxes to allow you to enter up to 3 people to "baggage" with, meaning you want to be placed on the same team together. Listing baggage should be reserved for roommates, spouses/SO's, people you never get to play with, and/or those it's convenient to carpool with. Baggage is certainly not limited to those categories, but rec league is for meeting new people, hence the cap on the number of people who can link up (it also makes forming the teams easier).
More on Baggage:
• Rec League baggage trains are capped at FOUR people. NO EXEMPTIONS (this includes players captaining together and any players they also want to baggage with).
• Each player in a baggage train must fill out a separate registration form.
• Each member of a baggage train will be required to enter the WAFC Username(s) of the other people in the baggage train, so get your friends usernames before signing up (this also provides confirmation that both people want to baggage together).

$45 for rec league???
I am confused as to what $45 for summer rec league is paying for. Even when we had shirts last year it was only $35, and spring rec league this year was only $25. I would rather pay less money and not get a shirt. I have played and captained in WAFC leagues for 6 years, but this price is making me reconsider playing this summer.
$45 for rec league???
I'm also considering not playing this summer. First we haven't even received an email about summer registration. If one is going to go out it would be nice to know what we're paying for. In two years the price has almost doubled for summer league.
agreed
I understand that WAFC commissioners have a lot of decisions to make, and accommodate a very complicated process quite well for an understaffed group. And I certainly do appreciate the promise of new turf fields. My main gripe is about the jersey. I have tons of shirts of all colors at home, and would much (much) rather pay less and not get a jersey; I don't need one (haven't touched last year's jersey since last year). Is there any way this can be made an option, preferably even for this year? We don't need to be like the kickball folks. I believe I made a similar comment last year that wasn't acknowledged or taken into account for this year. Thanks.
Hey all, I understand your
Hey all, I understand your concerns. We decided to start offering shirts for a number of reasons, including among many many things that it helps teams identify one another and helps WAFC increase visibility, which helps when we're fighting for field space...yes, it always comes back to field space (keep in mind the increases last summer included jerseys AND field cost increases; this year was just worse). We got a lot of positive feedback about them and decided to continue at least another year.
And yes, the whole explanation and announcement should have gone out before registration was open. We just didn't want to delay opening any further since we're under a time crunch to get registration complete before games can start (partially due to, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, the fact that our field permits were issued later than normal as costs and availability were negotiated).

trouble signing up
so i'm havin trouble signing up for rec league. usually theres a register link but i can't seem to find it. help!
I don't mind $45, but what about the newbies?
I don't mind at all paying $45 for a league. Thing is, I'm talking to a friend of mine right now, who has never played except for high school. She claims to be poor. She'd play if it didn't cost as much.
I think PADA used to do (or still does) a thing where females that had never played in a league before get the first season free. Even if you just dropped it to $25, I think it would help.
And we ALWAYS need new women trying out rec.
Please share your
Please share your responses.... I too have never played in a league. Try Outs? When and where?
How many games per week?
Is it going to be ~1.5 games per week like in the past? Trying to figure whether to sign up for rec and intermediate, or just intermediate.
$45 Rec fee
I find the reasoning by the commissioner above a little hard to accept. If visibility is the issue, it's difficult to miss 14+ people throwing a disc around. When I used to play pick up on the Mall, the frisbee players (read: flying disc) were the easiest ones to find amongst the huddled masses of soccer, football and kickball. If the issue is team recognition, frisbee at it's most basic has revolved around the concept of darks v. lights and, in almost a decade of playing this sport, have NEVER had any issues with teammate recognition using this obvious fundamental. If the league wants to offer jerseys, that's great, but I think it goes against the spirit of the sport to force people to buy an unnecessary product. You have a self-proclaimed 2000+ members in WAFC, and other than the cost of the parties WAFC hosts (which struggle to get 100+ in attendance per), I find it hard to believe that you need to hit up 2000+ players an extra $20-25 due to field/money constraints. If I'm wrong, feel free to make the league's costs transparent/public to justify this hike in price. If not, I feel this cost is egregious, it sullies the spirit of the game and I strongly encourage WAFC to reconsider and make the jerseys optional.
Responses
A) We've considered incentives to get more women involved. Just haven't had the time to work out a system. Want to help?? Also, we cost out how our league compares to other sports in DC once every couple of years and WAFC is still more cost-effective compared to kickball, soccer, bocce, etc. Despite what it seems, we're trying to keep it as cheap as possible.
B) 1.5 games per week sounds about right for both rec and intermediate (per league).
C) We just got our final field costs and unfortunately, the increase this summer won't even cover the total costs just for fields. We've been really fortunate the past 20+ years to have a lot of free field space in DC, but that era is over.
D) The "finding your team" comment comes from the feedback we got from last summer that folks found it easier to find their team among the 19 million soccer/softball/and other frisbee players because everyone was wearing one uniform color, especially with the brighter colors. That was just one example of many that we received as feedback when asking people if they liked the jerseys.

time
What time will games start? and will they be on the same day every week or cycling through mon/wed/fri?
6:30pm is the normal start
6:30pm is the normal start time for weeknight games. Fields with lights may also have an 8:30pm time slot. Schedules follow a random pattern with most games split between M/W and a few on Friday.
Summer Registration
Hi:
I would like to register for the summer rec league; but I do not belong to a team. I am a beginner.
1) Can I register if I don't presently belong to a team? (I want to join a league to meet people who enjoy Ultimate and to improve my game)
2) HOW does one register for the league? I can't seem to find a form, although I see lots of info about the cost of registration.
Thanks for the help!

rec league questions
Is there a minimum age for rec league participants? I am 14 and played on a high school team this year. My coach recommended that we join a WAFC summer rec league, and I'd love to play more over the summer. How many games do we play per week? Are there practices also, or just games?
You can play but you'll need
You can play but you'll need a parent to sign the WAFC Waiver. The waiver is attached to the league information page so you can print it out and have someone sign it before the first game. (http://www.wafc.org/sites/default/files/WAFC%20waiver.doc)
One game per week, generally. No practices.
Weekend rec league
I don't see anywhere to sign up for weekend rec league. is that still open?
rec league roster
when are you going to post the ammended roster with the last minute registration
Updated rosters will be posted..
...in about two minutes.
schedule
Don't know if there is a better place to post this but what's up with the schedule and why are rec games being played on tues/thurs? This is inconvenient and frustrating for those playing in multiple leagues.
