Update June 10, 2010: Registration is still open as we try to sort out how to handle the reduced number of teams. Submit bids here (no money required until you're confirmed). http://www.wafc.org/webform/611
The WAFC Savage Seven tournament is a one day event held each summer to celebrate the sport of Ultimate. Teams consist of seven players who will play approximately seven hours of Ultimate against seven other teams. Games are slightly shorter than normal, only 9 points instead of 15, but without substitutions they feel like an eternity by the end of the day.
Championship goes to Chris Braunlich and Company, aka 50 Eggs, who soundly defeated Savageous and Contagious (Catherine Nelson's squad) after a full day of Ultimate. Third place goes to Monument (Dan Hatfield) and fourth to 2 Girls - 1 Cup (Aalok Sharma). The Chumpionship was won by Old Age and Treachery (Bryan Greenwald) and their win stands as one of the finest in Savage Seven history as they endured long enough to force a double forfeit, clearing the path to the Chumpionship without playing a single playoff game. The Savage Seven tournament will be held as planned this Saturday (6/19) at Lake Fairfax. Games will start at 9am. The format is being worked (11 teams are registered so it's somewhat of a mess) to give everyone max playing time and also the most equitable games possible. The upper and lower brackets will be combined, so anticipate some lopsided games.
If you know of anyone trying to put together a last minute team please encourage them to do so ASAP as 12 teams would be much easier to work with.
We received few registrations this year than expected. We currently have 7 lower division bids and 2 upper division bids.
Options: Combine the divisions and setup a 9 team tourney (format for that sucks but we would make something work); toss the upper division this year and just do a lower division (finding one more team, hopefully, to make it an 8 team pool), and setup a hat tournament on the extra fields; or something else we haven't thought of yet.
Comments? Post below.
Teams may register here, http://www.wafc.org/webform/611. Registration will be kept open until about noon on June 5th. Teams will be notified later that same day if their bid is accepted/rejected. Sorry for the late opening to registration.
Savage Seven is officially scheduled for June 19, 2010 (rain date is August 7, 2010) at Lake Fairfax. Games will start at 9am, captains meeting at 8:30am to receive field assignments and schedules. Tournament format and rules will be posted later this month. There will be an upper and lower bracket with eight (8) teams each.
Savage Seven is coming up quickly (June 19th). Registration will open next week (May 10th). You will need a full roster (7 primary players with 2 alternates) in order to complete registration. The gender ratio is 5-2. There will be an upper and lower bracket. You will self select for the bracket of your choice, however, lower bracket teams may not have a high team "score". Each player will be ranked (by the captain) on experience, throws, speed, and agility. Upper bracket teams will have essentially all players in the top tier or two for each category.
Savage Seven is officially canceled for the year. We weren't able to get enough teams for the (3rd) rescheduled date. August 30th at Anacostia is now open field space. If some players want to self-organize a pickup tournament or game they are welcome to do so. Keep in mind it's a WAFC permit you're playing under so all normal rules apply (i.e., don't play in rain, no alcohol, etc.) because we don't want the park police/supervisors to ding WAFC for anyone's behavior.
For those not playing, checkout the Chesapeake Open this year, just northwest of the city in Poolesville, MD. http://www.wafc.org/chesapeakeopen. There is also normally pickup on the Mall on Saturday morning around 10am and pickup in Rockville around 10am also.
August 1, 2009, 9am at Lake Fairfax. Teams that are withdrawing need to let me know ASAP so I can try to find replacement teams. Team rosters may be adjusted at the captain's discretion, just be considerate of other teams if you're in the Lower division and don't stack your roster with all stars.
Questions, email me or post a note here.
Kevin Leclaire took some excellent photos of the first games on fields 1 and 2. The photos can be previewed below (click Read more) or found in full on his website, http://www.ultiphotos.com/wafc/2009/savage7, along with many other Ultimate-related photos.
About 16 hours until game time. Weather looks OK for tomorrow, high of 86 with thunderstorms possible but not steady rain. Everything is on schedule for 8-8:30am setup (feel free to lend a hand), 8:30am captain's meeting, 9am first game. Shirts will be distributed at the captain's meeting. They're white t-shirts, so don't forget that everyone needs to bring a dark.
Start time is 9am with a captain's meeting at 8:30am. Recognizing this is Saturday and it's Ultimate, we know people will be running late, however, we'll be pushing to get things going and when the games start if you're team isn't ready points can be assessed. So try to be there on time, please, for the other teams if not for yourself.
Shirts will be distributed at the captain's meeting. Shirt trading to adjust for size problems is expected, all shirts have the same logo and colors.

2 Hold the Mayo, DC, Huldah Gronvall
3 Date-A-Cougar, DC, Tavish DeAtley

The Savage Seven t-shirts are white technical shirts from Five Ultimate with the Savage Seven logo on the front and the WAFC slogan on the back.

Thanks to all the teams for getting payments in quickly. We're fully paid and ready to play now. Only two weeks until the tournament.
Attached is a spreadsheet with a list of all the t-shirt sizes and stats for players. Please double check the t-shirt list, especially if you had a change after submission, I easily could have screwed up and used the wrong size. I will be submitted the t-shirt order either today or tomorrow (1st or 2nd) and I don't think I can make any changes after I submit the order.
Stats are also available, so you can see how everyone rated themselves and how the teams stack up against each other. Here's the basic info for those that don't want to open the spreadsheet.
You can follow the Savage Seven updates via RSS now, the URL for the feed is http://www.wafc.org/groups/933/feed, you should see the orange RSS icon on the lower right of the main page for the group, i.e., www.wafc.org/savage.
All accepted teams need to pay the team fee ASAP. Teams that don't pay by June 5th may be replaced with a team from the waitlist. If you have any problems paying please contact the TD, savage at wafc.org. Pay using here, http://www.wafc.org/product/936.

questions about savage seven tourney
Maybe I'm missing this info but I can't find the following info. I am the captain of Will Huck for Food (lower division).
1. What team number are we (so I know what field we start on)
2. What time does the first game start? 9am? 10am?
Thanks.
