Past Leagues:
Congratulations to Deloitte for winning the Corporate B League Championship, defeating Booz Allen 15-10 in the finals. Captains Mike Malloy and Abby Robinson said this has been a long-time coming, as Deloitte started in Corporate C league 4 years ago and has just kept improving every year. Read more of their story below...
Deloitte's Ultimate Frisbee team began its march to league dominance four years ago as "Speed with Purpose." That team, founded by BearingPoint Public Services colleagues, began life in the Washington Area Frisbee Club's (WAFC) Corporate C-league - a league known for its easy-going attitude and teaching-friendly style of play. The debut season sure showed a lot of teaching and spirit...but not a lot of winning. As the years progressed, so did the team's ability. Gradually a coherent defense emerged, then an offense. On-field communication increased as we actually began remembering each other's names (note: of the original squad of ten, more than half are still active on the team's roster, including Tom Fukuda, Jim McCartney, Adam Kutcher, Jon Cohn, Seth Brogadir, and Molly Bauch).
The team added new blood, including Abby Robinson, the 2009 and 2010 co-captain. Abby's 2009 recruiting drive included extensive use of D-Street to identify and pitch new talent for the team roster. Co-captain Mike Malloy also provided some strong on-campus recruiting efforts at American University last fall, which resulted in two more club frisbee players joining the firm this summer. The infusion of new talent, including standout rookies Roman Ryan and Dan Diorio, helped put the team over the top. 2010 saw a dominant team playing competitive Frisbee in the Corporate B league, defeating new and established teams alike.
The final game of the season pitted Deloitte against Booz Allen in a rematch that gave Booz a chance to avenge a hard-fought loss in the regular season. Deloitte jumped to an early lead, taking half convincingly 8-4. A succession of cross-field breakmark hammers (upside down throws) and a dropped pull brought Booz back to within striking distance of the lead. However, Deloitte surged forward showing surprising patience on offense and a willingness to utilize the team's deep bench to provide sustained energy on the field. Tensions rose as darkness fell, and each team began forcing longer throws in an attempt to stage a definitive breakout. Sharon Wells caught a full field throw just short of the goal line and then threw a short blade for the score. Strong defense provided Deloitte with the opening it needed, and capitalizing on a turnover near midfield, Mark Ranneberger launched a floaty forehand huck 40 yards downfield to a sprinting Roman Ryan, sealing the victory 15-10 for Deloitte. Cheers, beers, and "2010 League Champion" discs followed, much to the delight of all.
